Hemingway in Florida
This is the Hemingway in Florida project, by Student Ambassadors and rising scholars Henry Johnston and Alec Kissoondyal.
This project works to track down Hemingway’s path in Florida, outside of his well known time in Key West.
Plaques placed at each of these locations would raise awareness of their historic value, and encourage their preservation.
This project has been presented at the FCEA conference, and will be presented with updated information in Montana.
Currently the route and settings of “Strange Country” are being researched and mapped (shown below).

Strange country: Miami
Hemingway’s ‘Strange Country’ starts off in Miami, where the characters are staying "on the thirteenth floor of a hotel on Biscayne Boulevard. . .'
The rooms they are staying in "overlooked the bay, the park and the traffic passing on the Boulevard".
Later, the characters "had lunch at a seafood restaurant owned by Greeks". During lunch, they had "a good bottle of really cold, dry, resiny tasting Greek white wine and for dessert they had cherry pie".
When the time comes to leave Miami, the characters "drove along Biscayne Boulevard and turned west to get onto the road to Coral Gables and the Tamiami Trail".
